Obituary of Mary Elizabeth Gomon

Mary Elizabeth Gomon, our loving Mom, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2nd with family at her side. She left us far too soon, after battling cancer for 2 ½ years. She was born in Monterey on April 1, 1941 to Joseph and Tamar Pray. She felt blessed to be a fourth generation Monterey native, always knowing that she lived right where her heart felt most at home. Mary was happiest when she was enjoying the company of friends and family, laughing and having a good time. She will be remembered for living her life with a fun loving spirit and a sense of humor that always brought fun to any occasion, whether she was saying something silly or sharing a big smile or a hug. She loved to travel, to dance (starting with tap dancing as a young girl), loved all types of music and enjoyed searching out and taking in local live performances with friends. The friendships that she had over the course of her life were such a source of joy, strength, and support to her, many on a daily basis and many since childhood. She was proud that while she was a mom, she also worked very hard to provide for herself and her family, working as a bookkeeper for a number of local small businesses. Since retiring, she enjoyed her weekly Tai Chi practice and donated her time with the Community Hospital Auxiliary by volunteering at the Blood Center. She is survived by her daughter Jill Gomon (Darryl Long) of Monterey, her sons Rob Gomon of Sedona, AZ and Richard Gomon of Livermore, CA and grandson Robbie Gomon and his wife Elena of Florence, OR. She was preceded in death by her son Rickie in 1965 and her sister Helen McConnell. We are all so thankful for the support of Dr. Roger Shiffman, the nurses of Hospice of the Central Coast and the Cancer Wellness Support Group during this journey. A celebration of Mary's life will be held on Friday, August 21st at 12 noon at Mission Mortuary, 450 Camino El Estero, Monterey.
