Obituary of Mary A. Spowart

Pacific Grove Mary Spowart passed away peacefully after struggling to recover from a large embolic stroke. Never one to concede or back down, always a fighter, Mary left this world with the same tenacity and fight the she lived with, succumbing to pneumonia in the end. Mary was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. Her parents were immigrants from Germany, and she was the last surviving sibling of ten children. In her twenties she moved to the Bay Area where she met the love of her life, David Spowart. She had worked in an accounting office, but soon quit after marrying David. As a Naval officer's wife, she found herself needing to move often. A strong matriarch and mother to three sons, Mary was the backbone of the family, installing pride, independence, and success in all her family members. She will be fondly remembered by surviving family members as a devoted wife, mother and housekeeper. After raising her children she went back to work at the Defense Language Institute as an executive secretary for over ten years before retiring. She lived many enjoyable years on the Monterey Peninsula with her husband David. She always put family first, being a strong force of love and caring that quietly influenced those around her. She loved tradition, stressing the importance of family gatherings for birthdays and holidays where her wonderful meals were always at the center. She insisted on serving Sunday meals, often cooking lamb, her favorite. She is missed and loved by many family and friends. She is survived by her husband, David (Monterey); her sons, Michael (Brigette, Colorado), Richard (Mary, Colorado), Gregory (Lesley, Monterey); and her six grandchildren, Michelle, Sara, Zachary, Kirk, Daniel, and Mark, as well as many nieces and nephews. Mary Spowart's interment will take place on Friday November 27th at 1pm at the San Carlos Cemetery.
