Obituary of Vincenzo Vultaggio

Monterey Vincenzo Vultaggio, 91, died Friday, November 27th, 2015 after an illness. He was being cared for at Westland House nursing home during his final days surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He leaves his wife of 74 years, Grazia Vultaggio; his sons, Nino & Biagio Vultaggio; daughter, Vita Bileti; brother, Giovanni Vultaggio; sister, Rosaria Caradonna; along with 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; Antonino and Vita Vultaggio, and his brother, Rosario Vultaggio. Born in San Vito Lo Capo, Sicily, the son of Antonino Vultaggio & Vita Esposito, grew up as a skilled fisherman from the time he was 10 years old. He would accompany his grandfather and soon mastered the trade of fishing which allowed him to establish himself in the United States. He married his wife Grazia at the age of 18 and supported his family as a fisherman. He lived a majority of his life in San Vito Lo Capo and later moved to Monterey in February, 1970 at the age of 46. His first night fishing in Monterey, the boat he was fishing with "New Roma" capsized and he and his crew survived the Monterey Bay waters. He was not discouraged by this incident and continued to fish in Monterey as well as Alaska until he retired in 1984. He enjoyed his daily visit to the coffee shop where he would socialize with his friends. He was an avid bocce ball player who competed in a variety of tournaments and earned numerous accolades. He was also an active member of the Italian Catholic Federation. A viewing will be held at Mission Mortuary in Monterey on Monday, November 30th from 5:00-7:00 pm. Funeral Services will follow on Tuesday, December 1st at 1:30 pm at San Carlos Cathedral Church.
